Being the large city lstanbul is, literally millions of locals and foreigners need to use public transport daily to avoid the huge traffic problem lstanbul has, and lstanbul offers many options – metro, trams, buses, ferries and taxis.
ln addition to the above, there are also mini buses, better known as a dolmuş. Public buses have specific letters and numbers to indicate their destination, and provide transportation to every point in lstanbul, whereas the mini buses only provide transportation to certain points.
All public transport can be paid for by using the lstanbulkart, with the exception of the mini buses which one must pay for by handing cash to the driver.
The lstanbulkart can be purchased from certain kiosks for a small fee, and loaded with credit at machines at most tram stops, bus stops and ferry terminals, and there is usually a member of staff on hand to offer help.
Taxis and VIP vehicles are obviously more expensive, but are always a more personal and flexible option.
However, lstanbul’s public transport system is one of the most modern, efficient and cost-effective in the world, reaching to every corner of this sprawling city.
